I have had the privilege of getting to know Colt's girlfriend this fall. Knowing Colt, I knew she would be great before I even met her. Let me just say, she knocked our socks off. Most people think it's because of her outward beauty...Yes, she is beautiful but she has an incredible and rare beauty on the inside. She has a genuine love for others and for the Lord. Unfortunately she has had to put up with a lot that she hears is on the internet about her. But like Colt, she is very grounded and has not let it affect her. This couple is truly a blessing to everyone around them and have been a great example to my kids.

Sure thing, Lynn. Unfortunately, a sad commentary on our society is that if someone is kind, sweet, a Christian and just happens to be blonde and attractive, they are fair game for the anonymous cowards who get their kicks by making lewd remarks on the Internet. Glad to hear she's just like Colt. And luckily, Colt is so grounded that I can't imagine any amount of attention or fame would ever change him.

Yeah, I have no idea how it will all play out, but Alabama is ripe for an upset this weekend after that emotional squeaker over LSU. Mississippi State could surprise everyone. If not, in two weeks, the Auburn game is always a tough one for the Tide.

I'm so confused... I have never been a Tech fan (sorry Danny - no offense), but should we hope they finish well????? I think I would rather see Tech have a chance at the championship than OU. This is all just making me pretty crazy - and there are too many scenarios and too many what ifs. I guess I'll just have to be patient a little longer. AAGH!

Kris from Austin, Texas said:

Here is one more for you.. OU beats Texas Tech, but Somehow loses to Okie State.. OU is out of Conference Contention because they have two loses. Texas Tech goes on to play for the Conference Title and lose to Mizzou.. Texas is now # 2 because Texas Tech is two loss... Here Texas will play Alabama or Florida.. Now this is assuming that Alabama and Florida win out the rest of their regular season games
11:47 11/11/2008

Kris Dixit from Austin, Texas said:

Danny, your wife has a point.. Its possible.. I have also been looking at other possibilities where Texas does not play for the conference title and still ends up playing for the national championship, for example, Alabama wins out and plays Florida for the SEC title where it wins as well. Alabama is #1. Now Oklahoma beats tech goes to #2 and plays Missouri for the Conference title. Here a resurgent Missouri comes back in the 4th quarter to beat Oklahoma in over time.. Who is #2 now... Texas.. So Texas plays Alabama in the national championship. Basically there are lots of possibilities where Texas can end up with a championship title and not a conference title.. Wierd

Kris from Austin said:

Thanks Danny.. Much appreciated.. I think if you are a longhorn fan it all boils down to two games. Root for the Pokes to beat Tech this saturday, and root for Oklahoma to win out.. I know I am saying that Danny's alma mater will go two loss (sorry Danny, but we need this :) ).. But if this happens the two top schools in the Big 12 South will be the Longhorns and Sooners. And the Longhorns go to the Conference title (based on the #2 tie breaker) and hopefully to the National Title. This also means that the longhorns have to crush all the teams that they play.. and that is not going to be easy because, Baylor is getting better, the Kansas game is an away game and Texas A&M is always a tough game. If Texas can manage to crush these three teams, then those style points will go a long way at the end in the BCS polls..

I am not really close to Colt as are some of you but my wife Sandy and I have been watching Colt play since he was a junior in high school. I love watching college football more than any other sport and to be able to watch a person you associated with is even better. I would like nothing more than to see a player of Colt, one who puts God first in his life, to win the the Heisman. Brad would let Don Connell and I stand on the track at the Jim Ned home games and Don and I had our good luck charms that we wore to the games Don wore a Nebraska hat that had just an N on the front, he called it his Ned hat, I always wore this old red shirt and a big grey cowboy hat and everytime colt came out of that tee pee he gave Don and I the thumbs up. I will never forget those nights it was such a joy then and it is such a thrill now to see Colt as such a success. Be home in 13 days. God Bless

Kris from Austin, Texas said:

You need math.. you have a geek right here... Ok Danny is right, you do not need for Tech to lose twice for Texas to go to the Conference Title. The tie breaker rules are as follows. 1) Number of conference wins 2) if tied for # 1 then head to head wins 3) if tied for #2 as well then BCS ranking....... Ok so based on this, if OSU defeats Tech next week at Lubbock, this will most likely mean that we go to the Conference Title. Why? Because, then Tech plays Oklahoma at Norman, and they have to beat Oklahoma, and if OSU defeats Oklahoma in Still water, we should hold on to our highest BCS rank and go to play for Conference Title. The path of least resistance is that OSU defeats Tech, and Oklahoma Defeats Tech, and we have head to head since all teams are one loss and Texas still goes to the Conference Title. Here are the circumstances where Texas does not go to the Conference Title. 1) If Tech Wins out 2) If Tech loses to OSU, But somehow beats OU and then OSU loses to OU. Here We get head to head with Tech, Tech since both OSU and OU are now two loss and are out of Conference Title Contention. Tech Goes to the conference title. Suffice it to say that Tech holds its destiny in its own hands and how they play oklahoma and OSU will determine if they have a chance to go to the conference title..

One of my English teachers was none other than Coach Burl McCoy (and we all know who his grandson is ;-)). He has been a very positive influence on a lot of students and raised a fine family. Oh....and he was a pretty good English teacher, too! We always tried to get him off the English lesson and talking about basketball and track.

Actually, there will be a Tech blog next season. It will be about Taylor Potts. He's apparently going to be the new QB. He'll be a junior in 2009, and he holds a bunch of QB records for Abilene High. I won't be writing it, but I'll be setting it up for another Tech alumnus to write. BTW, I've been looking at Big 12 tiebreaker procedures, and Lynn, I don't think Tech has to lose twice for Texas to still be in the hunt. But a third team has to finish with one loss as well. I hope to blog about that when I return from a trip down to the Hill Country tomorrow, but be forewarned, there is math involved.

I look at it this way, we are lucky to have a 'dyed in the wool' Tech alumn, take his time, use his journalism ability, to give us 'dyed in the wool' UT fans, a 'site' for our boy McCoy. You are going above and beyond your call Danny, and I thank you for doing this. You have put aside your own Alma mater, but for one game, to promote Colt McCoy. If anyone should be upset it should be Tech fans.....we have you, they don't. But Jim had a good idea, 'GoGrahamGo'. Why not? There is enough of you to go around. I am so proud of Colt for being a really positive sports role model for the younger kids. It takes a lot of courage and conviction on his part...to stand up in front of a national television audience and give the glory to God! I want only the best for Colt and this Longhorn team. I never thought I'd root for an Oklahoma team over a Texas team, but I'll be rooting for OSU and OU to beat Texas Tech....and soundly!! :-) Most of the players on the OK teams are from Texas, anyway! Jim: Thank you for your dedication to Colt and the Longhorns. Danny shares that same dedication to Colt just like you. He has been so kind and loyal and absolutely wonderful in cheering Colt on as a brother in Christ and as a football player. We all love Danny and everything he says even when he talks about Tech because we know his heart. It is tough when you care about a boys well being and want him to succeed and you also have a heart string to your own school.Believe me he has never said anything on this blog concerning Tech vs. Texas that would make any of us dislike him. I know personally that Colt loves him and so do we. He has done a great job promoting Colt's talents on the field but more than that he has promoted Colts heart before this country. Here is to hoping that Tech looses the next two games so that the horns will go to the big 12 championship. I say that knowing that Danny understands how I feel, and I know he would not be angry that I expressed those feelings. Jim and Danny thank you for caring about a young man that strives to be God's man and glorifying Him.

If you don't want to be true to your school, that's just fine, and I'm glad you're also a fan of Colt. But don't presume to tell me what I was supposed to be feeling last night.

Jim from California said:

Danny, I regret that you missed my point and if you need an apology - done. But one shouldn't let their personal biases read alma mater get in the way of a tribute blog to Colt (which by the way, I've always thought was a good if not great). You hear the pros like Musberger or Herbstreit say Colt is a good kid and a excellent player but they don't say I'm pulling for (fill in the blank) because that's my alma mater or the school that I'd rather win over Colt's team. I recall Kirk saying when asked on GameDay on who he thinks will win say "I can and won't since I'm calling the game." I also recall Kirk saying something like he has four boys at home and he hopes they grow up to be like Colt. To me, that's worth more than any rewards or trophies. I note this is from your first entry: "Colt McCoy is the breath freshener college sports needs right now. As the line between college and professional sports gets blurrier and blurrier, and more and more players falling victim to the "what's-in-it-for-me" approach to sports, watching a player who cares about his God, his family and his team (in that order) before he thinks of himself makes this Red Raider root for burnt orange." You wrote this before the game. "No matter who loses, I guess I won't be too disappointed." Actually, the opposite should be true, that you would be disappointed in either case since 1) your alma mater would lose or 2) the decent, talented, hard-working young man that this blog does a great job of promoting suffers a team loss which Colt is always talking about in all of his interviews. He said this last night, too: "All that matters is a win. We’re disappointed but we’re going to keep our heads up and keep fighting. There is still a lot of football left to play. When you lose it’s tough. That’s a hard thing to deal with but this team is awesome and this team fought. We didn’t play good but we fought till the end. You can’t argue with that and like I said, we’re going to keep our heads up and keep fighting because there is a lot of football left to play and we’ve got to move on. We’ve got to put this behind us." Responding to your criticism of me, I too respect and admire Colt and Mack ... more than you can imagine. I am not a fair weather fan of Colt or the Longhorns. I always believed he WAS the one to be UT QB when Young left the program too early. He proved that a couple of years ago in the TX/OU game when he came in for Young. Also, I've not called for Mack's head because I have trusted him from the day he came to Texas with his coaching decisions and his winning record shows those results. As a matter of fact, Mack and his current coaches should be rewarded for what they have been able to do. No, I don't live in west Texas and have the opportunity to go to the same Church as Colt or have been fortunate enough to see him in HS ball as he set all of the state records. But I did go to Tech and that doesn't diminish the fact that I want him to win ALL of his games - even against Tech! --------------- Sam from San Saba, maybe you should read the above before judging me as "one of those rabid, spittle-spewing fans." Every day I vote for Colt, Ship, Quan, Muck and their team mates for whatever honor they are up for and I have attended every game or gamewatching party for YEARS, so yes Go Horns ... AND GoColtGo! Sorry if this is too long but I'm passionate about Colt, his teammates, & Longhorn football and if that makes me "one of those rabid, spittle-spewing fans" - so be it. Peace

To Jim, this is not one of those rabid, spittle-spewing fan blogs. There are a 100 of them out there, and I'm sure most of them today are blaming Colt for the loss, even though he is reason No. 1 why UT was even involved in a game of such magnitude in the first place. Jim, shame on you for blaming what happened last night on me. I watched Colt play in high school and I went to church with the kid. I knew what he was made of then and now. And believe it when I say I wasn't one of those - even before Colt took a snap from center for the Longhorns - who was screaming for Mack Brown's head for trusting Colt with his first post-Vince Young team. You need to have a little more faith in Colt, Jim. As Colt said after the game, "We're going to just keep on fighting. We've got a lot of football left to play." That's the Colt I know and admire. Shame on you Jim for being a fair-weather fan!

With what we have seen against Mizzou, this team has grown to the point where, they are playing traditional football and dominating at it. Against Mizzou, we saw the I formation, Zone read, Shotgun and all other traditional formations executed to perfection. We saw Cris Obgbanaya run all over Mizzou, Vondrell McGee showing that he had wheels as well and Fozzy there to take a 35 yard run as well. We say Brandon Collins be the go to guy for McCoy during Blitzes, Malcom Williams making a catch that I am still dreaming of and Then John Chiles chipping in with a 51 yarder to Dan Bucknor. Then there was McCoy, Shipley and Quan, showing why they are the leaders of the team. An Offensive line that protected McCoy (0 Sacks) and a Defensive line that will probably live in the Nightmares of Daniel Chase for a long time. I think you are beginning to get where I am going. This Texas team is the most complete football team I have seen since 2005, and it will take any team, execute their plays to perfection to come close to beating it. As I see it now, after watching the Texas Tech Vs Texas A&M Game (Texas A&M hung in there till the third quarter.. Texas A&M!!!), and the Oklahoma State Baylor game (a record setting day for the Baylor QB), I have strong doubts on the capability of these teams to come close to beating Texas.. Now, I dare to dream

Lisa, ACU is loaded with talent this season and Chance, a 6-2, 190-pound redshirt freshman has only suited up for two games, I believe. I'm afraid he's not going to catch a lot of passes this year because the Wildcats are blowing everyone away, and by the time he would get into the game, it would be bad form to keep throwing. ACU is 5-0, ranked No. 3 nationally and averaging 54 points a game, while only allowing about 14. They play in Abilene at 7 p.m. Saturday, so I wouldn't be surprised if Colt caught a ride with his parents to see the game after the Red River Shootout earlier in the day.

That's so interesting what Lynn had to say about how the Reporter-News doesn't do a good job of covering Colt McCoy. Let me quote: "After all he is basically from Abilene having grown up in Tuscola. Abilene carried all the football news about Jim Ned and still does. What is the deal? Are the sports writers for the Abilene Reporter News all Aggies?" I thought this was VERY interesting, especially this portion, "basically from Abilene." There is a young man who actually is from Abilene. His name is Case Keenum. He is the starting quarterback for the University of Houston Cougars. He led Wylie to a state championship in 2004 and deep into the playoffs two other years. You might remember him. Well, he's leading the nation in three statistical categories for quarterbacks and in the top five in several others. All right there with McCoy, and Sam Bradford, Chase Daniels and Graham Harrell. All of these players are terrific players and student-athletes and I think the Reporter-News does an adequate job of reporting on them. But one of the AR-N sports writers told me that the Corpus Christi newspaper actually designs the college football pages for the Reporter-News. So they really can't help it, that although Keenum regularly comes back to Abilene to do clinics and works with Fellowship of Christian Athlete events, they can't even get even an Associated Press game story about the latest Houston game. Did you all know that Houston defeated a Top 25-ranked opponent, on the road for the first time since 1984? Does everybody in Abilene know this? That the Corpus Christi newspaper designs the college sports page you read every Sunday? I think it's a real shame that just because there are lots of Aggies, Longhorns and Red Raiders who make their living in Abilene, that this should mean that some home-town player should not get as much press as other (no-so) home-town players get just because there are less graduates from his college residing in Abilene. News is news, no matter who is buying (or saying they are buying) your newspaper. The whole Wylie community wants to know how Keenum is doing. I can't think of another Wylie grad who has made such an impact on the college football scene (please correct me if I'm wrong). Well, people, all I can say is read the Houston Chronicle and espn.com if you really want to find out.

Lynn, I'll pass your comments along to the sports department, but you need to know it's sometimes all about timing. If the UT game had been at 2 p.m. instead of at 6 p.m., there probably would've been a more prominent display, but it was over close to the front page deadline and as all the other pages were being finished. It's a madhouse down there on Saturday night during football season - trust me, as a former Sports Editor, I know. Also, I know they get regular complaints from Aggies that the sports department likes UT the best as well. As a rule of thumb, I believe they try to give consistent coverage to Tech, Texas, A&M and Baylor.

(That was not even mentioned.) I am astonished that they do not report more favorably about Colt and the Texas team. After all he is basically from Abilene having grown up in Tuscola. Abilene carried all the football news about Jim Ned and still does. What is the deal? Are the sports writers for the Abilene Reporter News all Aggies? Please help.

I had a hard time staying awake for the whole game last night but I managed. They also said the mayor of Tuscola also operated the funeral home. The announcers found that amusing. You could really tell that they had done their homework on Colt, his family and Tuscola. Colt had another good game and we enjoyed it even though it was late. It was after all Saturday night though. I was a little ticked that it was six minutes into the game before we could start watching it on TV.

When I heard Colts stats I knew that TX would definitely get the better end of the deal. Great player, leader, great attitude, winner. I am so glad things worked out the way that they did. He makes valient choices and is a good christian, without being judgemental or hypocritical. He also seems to understand that like it or not he is a role model for kids all over Texas and the US with his status as the quarterback of the Longhorns. A lot of athletes say that they don't want to be idolized by kids and that they are human and what they do is no one's business but their own. But that isn't realistic. Kids are always going to look up to their favorite athlete, actor or singer. I think the ticket to Colt's success is that he lives his live to God's standards making his life a good one for kids to emulate. Any of us who are trying to follow God's plan for our lives are not going to find fault with a young man who makes righteous choices to please God. It is in whom you put your trust, God or man. As long as Colt follows his heart and God's guidance he is always going to be a good example to young kids to stay close to God, read their scriptures, do good in school and obey your parents. A lot of people just live this way on Sundays in their churches instead of it being their way of life everyday of the week. I admire that in Colt it's not just what church he goes to on Sunday but that he lives his life with his religion. I hope that makes sense. I am proud of him as a Longhorn leader, and what a contrast between his example and the opposite example of these kids getting in trouble with the law. I hope Colt's teammates will get their cues from Colt and Coach Brown's examples instead.

Just an interesting note about Colt. Two sundays ago he spoke in Abilene for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes yearly banquet. He was able to speak to a thousand or so high school athletes about being good Godly examples for other students. He stressed highly the importance of reading your bible and staying close to God. Keep Colt in your prayers for his safety while playing football and for his good influence on other people. I would imagine that being somewhat of a celebrity that it would be hard to function like a normal person because of everyone wanting your time or an autograph or picture. I pray that he finds the time for his family and places he can get away to to relax when he gets the chance.

@ Mary, thank you very much. Yes, things are going well, really much better than I could have expected when I was flat on my back from Sep 01-Jan 02. I am at least now up and around, even if I do have to use a cane and feel 100 years old at times. Thanks again.

@ William, I hope all is well. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I thought the team looked sharp too. Hopefully you will be able to get to one of the games. My dad is talking about us going to the game in El Paso and meeting up with relatives from AZ there. It will be fun. It is easier to get tickets to away games these days.

Saw the scrimmage last Saturday; Colt and the whole team looked pretty sharp. Would love to attend a Lomghorns game this year, probably can't. I have been slowly recovering from a badly fractured knee since late 2001. It got infected and I was within just hours of having to have my left knee amputated. All is much better now, though.

I was able to make the spring game. Colt was great on the first drive, but they kept blowing him dead (supposedly he got touched, though twice he ran free and once they whistled him for a sack when they were obviously timing him as he had a really good pocket.) I was frustrated because they were letting Chiles, Harris and Kinne play more. My dad reminded me that coach already knows what Colt can do, so his job is safe. It still frustrated me. I was proud of the offensive line and the running backs are looking good. I am especially proud of Blake Gideon who had lots of playing time on first and second team D playing free safety. He is from Leander, and my brother knows him from school. He is still young and learning but he made some good plays. Just my thoughts. Look forward to Danny's report and comments from Brad McCoy to see what he saw.

Just an update. I was pleased to know that Colt is truly as he appears; so many "jocks" are shallow, conceited, arrogant so-and-sos. I don't have children myself, but my cousin has a 23-year old. Colt, have I got a girl for you! :) Best Wishes To All

I had the good fortune of attending both the Jim Ned state girls and boys games. What a great year we had. I also saw Colt from a distance and would love to have gotten an autograph. I watched him play all through his playing time at Jim Ned. He was a great all around athlete. Keep up the good work with the Longhorns Colt. I may not be able to watch you play for Texas in person but I sure will be in front of my TV supporting you and the Longhorns. By the way the traffic in Austin is awful. Ha!

I am a homer, but I think Colt is the best. He doesn't have the strongest arm in the country, or run the fastest. But he is sufficient to get the job done in both catagories. The things that make him so great are the intangibles he brings. His intelligence, his game IQ, his leadership. He is like having a coach on the field. I think he rocks. I have never met him, but he sets a good example to the fans of someone who is honest, true to his faith, honorable etc. He is obviously someone who lives his faith every day of the week and not just Sunday. These are the role models that our children need to look up to. Not the T.O's and Randy Moss' of the world.

William Trent, you are right on. Colt is a part of my family and I have never known a more kind and humble boy. He has had the opportunity to meet several very famous people like Troy Aikman, and some others and he never boasts about it. We have to beg him to tell us about those meetings. He just smiles and goes fishing. ha!
